1+1-2 equals 40
November was a month with several mathematical operations. It was a transition month, both theoretical and metaphorical. The city slowly eased into winter, with the colorful autumn leaves coated in a pristine white blanket, made by the first snowflakes gently descending from the sky.
+1. Somehow, I managed to reach a new milestone- my 40th birthday! Turning 40 brings with it a mixed bag of emotions. While there may be a tinge of nostalgia for youth ( it feels like yesterday when I was in a hotel room in Hanover, celebrating my 30th birthday, drinking cheap beers from REWE and chatting all night with my then fresh distant relationship, now my significant other), there is also a sense of confidence and desire to make the most of the years ahead.
+1. “Today I just ran out of excuses”. The journey to 40 has been marked by growth, learning from mistakes, and gaining a much clearer sense of myself. It is a milestone that prompts reflection on the passage of time and the accomplishments and experiences that have shaped my life thus far. In order to become a better version of myself I realized that I have to embrace my inner fears and accept my “darkness”. With that said and as a gift for my birthday, I got myself a new tattoo. A Forest Creature from Stanley Donwood's art book of the Radiohead masterpiece, Kid A. To remind me of the constant fight with procrastination!
-2. They say that the 40s should be a decade that represents a life well lived, personal growth, and wisdom, that comes with age. Well, I am not sure about the first two, but I am sure about the pain that someone carries if he is “overflowing” with wisdom. So I decided to take a couple of steps back and remove my wisdom teeth!
As the next chapter begins, there is anticipation for the new adventures, challenges, opportunities that lie ahead, and the chance to embrace life with a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude. Cheers!
